What is Base64?

Base64 is a numeral system for base-64 that uses 64 digits and can be represented with 6 bits.

Base64 is one of many similar binary-to-text encoding schemes. It represents binary data in ASCII string format, by translating it into a radix 64 representation.

Base64 is used to encode binary information in emails and web pages. Base64 can also be used to send binary files via channels that are not 8-bit clean or do not need to worry about byte ordering issues.

How to Base 64 encode?

To convert binary data to base 64:

  • Open this link
  • Paste Binary file your binary data directly into the editor above.
  • Click on decode and wait for few a seconds.
  • The converted data are directly displayed in the base 64 editors.
  • Copy the result to the clipboard by clicking on the button "Copy to clipboard".

What can you do with Base64 Decode?

  • Base64 Decode is a unique tool that converts base64 data into plain text.
  • This tool will save you time and help you decode base64 data.
  • This tool allows you to load the Base64 data URL. It loads base64 encoded text and then decodes it into human-readable text. Click on the URL button and enter the URL.
  • You can also convert the base64 data File into plain text by uploading your file.
  • Base64 Decoder Online works on Windows, MAC, and Linux.

How does Base64 encoding work?

The data bits are then broken down into buffers of 24 bytes (3 bytes each). The buffer of 3 bytes is broken into 4 blocks of 6 bits each. These 6 bits create a number that corresponds to the index of the Base64 character set (A-Z, A-Z, 0-9, +, and /). If the number of bytes is not three, padding is used. == for one byte and = for two bytes.

What is Base64 Encoding used for now?

It's useful when you have binary data but still need to store it in a 7-bit environment. Let's say you have a Unix config, XML or java property file that contains settings for an app. You might find characters in those settings that are not allowed, such as encrypted passwords, HTML snippets, or any other arbitrary data. You might find Base64 encoded data useful. Mail and file systems are now able to handle 4-byte words that contain millions of characters.

Base64 Encoding: When to Use

Base64 is a poor security option if you want to obscure the data. There are many tools that can decode the data, without the need for any key. You just need to convert the data into another format. Encryption is a good option if you want to conceal your data. If you have to store encrypted data in a text document, the encrypted data can be used to Base64-encode.
